step by step, inch by inch

I put up some shibori tonight. I have this shibori tote bag in my head and I really want to try to make it. In my head it is black and white, very chic. And I tried I really did but my finished dyed piece will not be black and white. I started with white cotton sateen – my absolute favorite fabric to dye. I washed it and while it was still damp I got to work.

Here is where I ended up

This is a waxed sinew whatever that is. It's the absolute best thing to use for arashi. It kind of stretches but doesn't break and you can re use it. The wax is great for the resist

You can get it at Michael's craft in the leather section.

I used a much thicker piece of PVC than usual.

I wrapped the fabric around the pole probably twice. It was till damp so it sort of stuck to itself. Then I started the wrapping with the sinew.

Here it is all wrapped.

Then I scrunched it all up. This is always harder to do that I remember. I usually have to go from the top and then the bottom.

I started to paint with pewter fabric paints. They are thin like dyes but are paints. They don't saturate the fabric as much as the dye. I still like dye though!

I am looking forward to seeing your Shibori results. I wondered if you have ever dyed ribbon or paper. If so, I would love to hear about the materials and processes used. Thanks!

Love to hear from you!
