Working on a ginkgo order and had some discharge paste left so I just kind of smeared it all over an piece of muslin I dyed a few months ago. Instead of a brush I used a whisk. I don’t know why. It was just there. I like the photo better than the real thing. I’ll steam it and if it is decent I will show you how it came out tomorrow!
Discharge paste recipe:
Start the night before you want to use it.
mix
1 quart of water and 1/3 cup of urea in a blender (not the one you use for food!) Use hot water, the urea will turn the water cold. Leave it in the blender.
Then add 2 tablespoons of alginate and blend on high until you hear the blender make a different noise (its getting thicker)
leave it overnight and now you have a beautiful smooth print paste that you can use with dyes or thiox.
Don’t forget the soda ash!!!
To one cup of paste add 1 teaspoon thiox and 1 teaspoon that you have dissolved in an ounce or two of very warm water
mix well it will last about an hour or maybe more. Steam the work while it is still wet from the thiox paste. (I use a very hot steamy rowenta iron)
when the color has discharged to your liking, stop steaming and wash out the alginate.
This is how I do it. Now tell me how you do it, okay?
They will make a very nice wedding gift, don’t you think?
Love your fabrics! Bring the outside in, lovely nature in textiles. Have fun at your day job indeed!
Thank you Joan!
Intriguing. I’ve never tried discharge, but I would like to someday.
Easier than I thought Laura, but definitely use a respirator!!
